“I wanted to create a story that reflects our environment and culture for young Arab readers. I never expected it would resonate with an international audience.”

Saudi manga artist Hamidah Hamadah, known online as Meeda, has earned global recognition after winning the Silver Award at the 19th Japan International MANGA Award, one of the world’s most respected honors for international manga creators.

Her work Quarter-Life Crisis, first published in Manga Arabia Youth magazine in 2022, was selected among 738 entries from 110 countries and regions, highlighting the growing presence of Saudi and Arab storytelling within the global manga landscape.

Inside Quarter-Life Crisis

Written and illustrated by Hamidah Hamadah, Quarter-Life Crisis explores the emotional and social complexities many young people face in their mid-twenties. The story follows Amal, a young woman navigating the uncertainty of early adulthood while balancing personal ambition, family expectations, and generational differences.

Amid the pressures of real life, Amal escapes into a vivid virtual world where imagination takes shape through mythical creatures and fantastical landscapes. Through this dual reality, Hamadah captures a relatable portrait of youth caught between responsibility and self-discovery, offering a thoughtful reflection on identity, creativity, and the universal search for purpose during a pivotal stage of life.

"I tried to present a romantic drama that makes the reader feel a sense of belonging, while reflecting aspects of Saudi culture and blending them with a mixture of imagination."

Manga Arabia and the Platform Behind the Breakthrough

Hamadah’s award-winning manga emerged through Manga Arabia, a Saudi initiative that has become one of the most influential platforms supporting Arabic manga production. The project is backed by Saudi Research and Media Group (SRMG) and aims to nurture regional artists while introducing manga storytelling rooted in Arab culture and experiences. Hamidah joined the initiative in 2020 as part of the first generation of Manga Arabia artists, helping shape the early visual identity of the platform.

Before that, in 2018, she was selected as one of the Saudi trainees in a summer training program with Toei Animation in Tokyo, offering her early exposure to the professional manga and animation industry in Japan. Under Manga Arabia, Hamadah published the first chapter of Quarter-Life Crisis in November 2022 through Manga Arabia Youth magazine, where it quickly resonated with readers for its relatable themes and character-driven storytelling.

Dr. Essam Bukhary on Supporting Manga Talent

According to Dr. Essam Bukhary, CEO of Manga Arabia, Hamadah’s achievement represents a broader success for the region’s creative talent.

“Ms. Hamida's achievement represents a victory for all Saudi and Arab talents and serves as a success story to inspire many. At Manga Arabia, we not only empower creativity and nurture future generations, but also invest in exceptional Saudi and Arab talents competing with renowned global works.”

The award demonstrates the growing ambition behind the Saudi manga industry, which seeks to build a creative ecosystem where local voices can compete on a global stage. This momentum is reflected not only in Hamadah’s international recognition but also in the broader achievements of the industry’s leaders. In March 2026, Dr. Essam Bukhary was also honored in Tokyo when Manga Productions and Manga Arabia received the Grand Prize in the Project Category at the CJPF Award 2026, further highlighting Saudi Arabia’s growing influence in the global manga and creative industries.

A Self-Taught Artist Shaping Her Own Path

Behind the international recognition is a self-made artist who built her career through dedication to storytelling and character design. Hamidah Hamadah is a self-taught concept artist and manga illustrator with more than eight years of experience working across character design, visual storytelling, and digital illustration.

Her portfolio spans multiple creative fields including:

• Serialized manga
• Indie game concept art
• Storyboarding for local productions
• Character design commissions

At the core of her work is a strong belief that creativity is not simply a profession but a direction in life. As she describes it:

“My creativity is the path to where I go.”

This philosophy is visible in the emotional depth of her characters. Whether she is illustrating a full manga narrative or a single portrait, her work consistently emphasizes expressive faces, subtle gestures, and strong personality. Her art often blends Japanese manga aesthetics with a softer illustrative style, resulting in characters that feel both cinematic and intimate.

Building Worlds Through Character Design

Much of Hamadah’s artistic identity lies in her talent for character-driven storytelling. Her illustrations frequently focus on individuals rather than environments, allowing personality, emotion, and narrative hints to emerge through posture, expression, and costume design. In many works, characters appear thoughtful or introspective, suggesting stories that extend beyond the frame.

Her ink illustrations, especially those created during Inktober challenges, demonstrate remarkable control of line weight and composition. Using traditional ink techniques, she creates dramatic contrasts between light and shadow, giving her characters depth even in monochrome. Several of these pieces explore fantasy themes such as elves, magical creatures, and myth-inspired characters. The style echoes classic manga techniques while incorporating delicate, almost painterly linework. The result is artwork that feels both contemporary and timeless.

A Distinctive Visual Style

Across both personal and commissioned work, Hamadah’s style is defined by expressive character design and painterly color palettes. Her digital portraits often feature luminous skin tones, large emotive eyes, and natural hair textures enhanced by stylized lighting and soft gradients. While many works explore fantasy-inspired themes such as witches or mythical figures, others focus on contemporary characters with subtle emotional depth. Her black and white ink drawings reveal strong technical precision, using cross-hatching and varied line weight to create dimension while maintaining clarity. This balance of delicacy and control gives her work a distinctive, recognizable visual voice.

A Rising Star in the Global Manga Movement

Hamidah Hamadah’s Silver Award win represents more than a single artistic achievement. It symbolizes a moment where Saudi creativity, Arab storytelling, and global manga culture intersect. Through Quarter-Life Crisis, she created a narrative rooted in relatable emotions and cultural context. Through her broader portfolio, she demonstrates the range and imagination of Saudi visual artists.

Her journey from self-taught illustrator to internationally recognized manga artist is not only inspiring but also indicative of a rapidly expanding creative movement in the Middle East. If this milestone is any indication, Hamadah’s story is just beginning.
